Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park

This historically significant park is the oldest and largest Woodland Indian site in the southeastern United States, occupied by American Indians from 350 to 750 a.d. Georgias oldest great temple mound, standing 57 feet high, dominates two smaller burial mounds and several ceremonial mounds.

Location: Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park is one of the most diverse natural and cultural areas in the state consisting of 1,293 acres. The park is set among the edge of an ecological transition zone between the flatlands of the Dougherty Plain to the south and east, and the steep gorges of the Chattahoochee Ravines to the north and west. Natural communities at Kolomoki are dominated by the presence of these steep ravines draining an otherwise flat plain. The ravines ultimately run into Kolomoki Creek, a Chattahoochee River tributary. They are characterized by forests of mesic hardwoods and spruce pine.

Recreation: Kolomoki Mounds is also known for its wide range of outdoor activities. Two lakes provide fishing and boating, and a campground is nestled under hardwoods and pines. Hikers can choose from three scenic trails. The Spruce Pine Trail offers views of lakes Yahola and Kolomoki, while the Trillium Trail meanders through the four different natural communities. White Oak Trail circles the mounds and passes through part of the village area. Children will enjoy the playgrounds, pedal boats,miniature golf and beach.
