Stephens State Park lies along the Musconetcong River and is located 1.5 miles south of Hackettstown on Route 604 (Willow Grove Street) and 7 miles west of Route 206 on Route 604, also known as Waterloo Road.

There is a Rock Climbing Area located about 5 miles away in Allamuchy Mt. State Park. A waiver for individual climbing, available at the Stephens State Park office or online at www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/url MUST be signed first. There are many other nearby attractions in Warren, Sussex and Morris Counties. The nearby Delaware River and Delaware Water gap National Recreation Area also offer many recreational activities for visiting families to enjoy.
Stephens State Park offers many recreational activities for both day and overnight visitors.
Picnic tables and charcoal grills are available, many of which are located right along the river. Designated multi-use trails are available for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Jersey Off-Road Bicycle association (JORBA) provides trail maintenance. Stephens State Park is a favorite choice for mountain biking in the area. All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are not permitted in the park.
Stephens State Park offers 40 tent campsites, some of which can accommodate RVs/trailers, but they must be self-contained as there are no water, sewer or electric hookups available at the park. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. There is also a playground and a playing field in the camping area.
Stephens State Park offers excellent fishing opportunities for the freshwater angler. During the spring and fall, the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife stocks the Musconetcong River with brown, rainbow and brook trout. A New Jersey fishing license is required for individuals between the ages of 16 and 70.
Canoeing and kayaking are enjoyable activities, especially when river conditions are favorable.
More than 470 acres of Stephens State Park are open to hunting. Hunting is subject to NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife regulations.
