The state forest was created in 1924 from what was considered "wasteland," cut over forests on former farmland. It was conserved to grow marketable timber. Today it continues to serve as a working forest while also offering recreation. In the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps developed the state forest, including the Steep Bank Brook Picnic Area.
