About this park

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest is a place of serenity and adventure, boasting 8 wilderness areas, 4 defined seasons, and 10 peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation. Described as being more vertical than horizontal, the nearby Eagles Nest Wilderness, designated in 1976, is a playground of craggy cliffs, sheer rock faces, alpine lakes, and deep, forested valleys. Visitors will find foot travel across this pristine area challenging and often strenuous, but will be rewarded with spectacular scenery. Wildlife in the area abounds. Bighorn sheep navigate rocky ridges and bull elk bugle at dusk. Scenic rivers sustain populations of cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Alpine regions provide habitat for pika and ptarmigan. These species, along with many others, depend on surrounding undeveloped wilderness, clean streams, and diverse forests to live.

Recreation
Dillon Reservoir, often referred to as Lake Dillon, is the greatest draw to Windy Point and an ideal spot for fishing, boating, and sailing. Anglers will find that the reservoir supports a healthy population of rainbow and brown trout, with an occasional cutthroat trout finding its way into the lake from feeder streams. Opportunities for hiking and biking include more than 7 paved miles of the 50-mile Summit County trail system. From the reservoir, the Old Dillon Reservoir Trail is a favorite. This short, easy trail has spectacular views of the Tenmile Range and the Continental Divide. The Old Dillon Reservoir was built in the 1930s to supply water to the original town of Dillon, which is now covered by the new Dillon Reservoir.

Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain ski resorts are all located within 10 miles from Dillon Reservoir. These resorts stay open year round.

Facilities: Windy Point Group Site has two sites for reservation: Lake Loop and Forest Loop. Both loops can accommodate tents, trailers, and RV's within the designated area on hardened gravel surfaces only. There is no electric hook-ups but potable water is available at a spigot in each loop. Boat launch access is via several marinas along the east shore of Lake Dillon to the shoreline at the Lake Loop. The shoreline is available for public use and there are several trails which travel through the campground and terminate at the lakeshore. Keep this in mind when considering this site, it is not a private facility, the public may be along the shoreline, walking the trails or walking the road during your event. Please read the rules you have agreed to as a renter. This site is on the White River National Forest. Please enjoy your event and treat the environment with respect. -Group Sites by reservation only www.recreation.gov 1-877-444-6777 -Always close the gate -Check-in time is 2pm and Check-out time is 11am -All vendor deliveries must adhere to these timeframes -Motorized, electric, or mechanized vehicles are prohibited off the designated road/ parking area. You must walk. - All food and beverages must be stored correctly in locked vehicles or the sheds provided – bears are not invited to the party. -Camping is not allowed in the trees, up the hill or anywhere off the gravel or hardened areas. -Commercial delivery of RV’s/Campers is prohibited. -Quiet hours are 10pm to 6am – be respectful of others. - All decorations are temporary, do not affix them to trees or any other natural vegetation. Remove all decorations. -You do not have exclusive use of the national forest around Windy Point, there are trails and shorelines that the public will be wandering around – be respectful and share. -Ground disturbance of any kind is prohibited. -Releasing or throwing any item is prohibited e.g. rice, seeds, flowers, animals, birds, etc. Lake Loop: facilities include: 2600 square foot covered pavilion on a concrete pad, 4 large grills, 3 serving tables, 5 tall gathering tables, 2 stainless steel wash basin preparation area, and X # tables. Site also contains a large group fire pit area with benches, two toilet facilities, and adequate parking. This is an accessible area with a gravel path paralleling the roadway. -Hooks, cables, screws, staples, or other kinds of fastener are prohibited in/on the pavilion. -All decorations must be attached using the cables/hooks provided. -Curtains, plastic, vinyl etc. walls must be attached to the existing cable system. -No weight bearing devices are allowed hanging from the pavilion or in the trees e.g. hammocks, swing chairs. Etc. -The small gathering area below the pavilion is available for use. -Structures of any kind are prohibited in this area. -Portable chairs are allowed in this area. -Tables are provided; they must remain on the concrete pad. -Use of the shoreline below the gathering area is prohibited, this is public land. -No tents, tables, or ceremonies are allowed below the small gathering area. -Motorized or electric vehicles are restricted to the gravel road/parking area. -Camping is prohibited off or outside the gravel, hardened area. Forest Loop: facilities include: a large gravel gathering area, group fire pit with benches, X # of tables, two toilets, and adequate parking. The gravel gathering area is accessible. -You may use the overlook area at the top of the grassy knoll/hill for a ceremony. -You must walk to the knoll. Motorized, mechanized, or electric vehicles are prohibited. -Lights or other illumination is prohibited on the grassy knoll. -Structures are prohibited in the grassy knoll at the top of the hill, but chairs are acceptable. -Camping is prohibited off or outside the gravel, hardened area. -A tent area is designated at the west end of the parking area.
Directions: From I-70, take the Silverthorne exit 205. Travel east on Highway 6 approximately 4 miles to Swan Mountain Road. Proceed 2 miles to Swan Mountain Recreation Area. Take dirt road to campground.
